On April 29 2018 at approximately 5:40 a.m., the Guelph Fire Department responded to a reported fire at 50 Mercer St., unit 6, Guelph.

Arriving at the scene, firefighters found a kitchen fire in a smouldering stage.

The fire was quickly brought under control and subsequently extinguished. An elderly female tenant was rescued from the apartment. The patient was placed in the care of Guelph - Wellington Paramedics and taken to hospital, where she was later transferred to Hamilton.

Five families living in other units in the building were evacuated to shelter until temporary living arrangements could by arranged by Victim Services and Red Cross.

The cause of the fire, along with a damage estimate was investigated by Guelph Fire investigators and Ontario Fire Marshal’s Emergency Management investigators. At the time of this media release the cause of the fire is believed to be a pot on the stove. The estimated damage in cost is $250,000.

Guelph Hydro attended the scene to shut down the power to the building. Guelph Transit attended and transferred the tenants to Sheldale Community Centre. Guelph Police services were on scene to assist on the scene.
