Freight train cars derail on north end track

Train cars carrying plastic pellets became derailed just before noon Wednesday, closing Dawson Road for about an hour

Two Guelph Junction Railway train cars carrying plastic pellets derailed Wednesday just before noon, coming off the tracks just behind Hatch Industries Ltd. and CSN Golden Triangle Guelph on Dawson Road.

The incident saw no injuries or damage to the train, though Dawson Road was closed for about an hour.

According to Antti Vilkko, general manager of facilities and energy management for the City of Guelph, some of the pellets the train was transporting spilled out, though he said there is no risk of hazard to the environment or the people in the area.

Vilkko said they don't yet know what caused the train to derail, or how fast it was going at the time. He did say incidents like this aren't common, and that he can't remember the last time this happened.

A company is scheduled to re-rail the cars tomorrow, at which time the City of Guelph can begin investigating.

The derailment will cause minimal impact to the railway, with only one customer being impacted, he said.
