Enbridge Gas Inc. confirms that it did work at a south Guelph house hours before it was levelled by an explosion Friday, but that the work was not related to the blast.
Andrea Stass, manager of external communications and media relations with the utility company, told GuelphToday that Enbridge replaced the gas metre at 32 Southcreek Trail on Friday morning.
She also said that testing done since the explosion shows the work the company did was not the source of the explosion.
"I can confirm that an Enbridge representative did visit this home earlier in the day and exchanged the meter set," Stass said in an email.
"This evening (Saturday), the site was cleared sufficiently for us to safely access the meter set, and we completed a pressure test which was successful, ruling out an external gas leak as the source," she said.
"The Fire Marshall has since released Enbridge from the scene."
Stass said the Technical Standards and Safety Association (TSSA), the provincial body responsible for enforcing public safety, "will now focus the investigation on the interior of the home and appliances, which will be removed and taken away for testing. This may take some time. So as of this point, the cause has still yet to be determined."
An explosion around 1:30 p.m. Friday destroyed the detached home.
A woman who was home at the time escaped relatively unharmed, as did her dog.
The Ontario Fire Marshal's office is in charge of the investigation.
They were on scene all weekend, using a backhoe to slowly remove pieces of debris so investigators could try and uncover a cause for the blast.
