Guelph is set to receive over $3.2 million by the province to improve its public transit system.

On Thursday, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, Caroline Mulroney announced $375 million through the Gas Tax program to help 109 municipalities across the province.

The municipalities selected deliver public transit service to 144 communities representing more than 92 per cent of Ontario’s total population.

Although a date is not specified, the province stated that it will distribute the funding as soon as possible this year.

"Supporting transit systems is more important than ever as municipalities across Ontario struggle during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mulroney in a press release.

Guelph will receive exactly  $3,242,087, similar to Kingston which is receiving 3,270,336.

Toronto is $185,200,996, the highest amount out of all municipalities whereas Atikokan is receiving the lowest, $9,317.

Funding for the Gas Tax program is determined by the number of litres of gasoline sold in the province during the previous year.

The funding can be used to extend service hours, buy transit vehicles, add routes, improve accessibility or upgrade infrastructure.
