The city of Guelph’s ranking among the Best Places to Live in Canada has taken a dramatic tumble, according to MoneySense magazine.

Last year, Guelph ranked number 74, this year it didn’t even make the top 100. In 2006, Guelph was named by the same publication as the second best place to live in Canada.

Many of the statistics used to create the list did not change year over year for Guelph. The average value of primary real estate remained the same at $633,889 and the average household income for both years remained steady at $98,572.

For the 2018 listing, Guelph ranked as number 128 out of 415 communities. Oakville, Ont. was ranked the top city in Canada.

Twenty-five of the Top 50 cities in this year’s ranking are in Ontario, while Alberta has 11 to Quebec’s 10.

To compile its 2018 list, MoneySense considered 10 categories: Economy, Affordability, Health, Weather, Commute, Crime, Taxes, Demographics, Culture and Amenities. The magazine used a different formula for its 2017 list, which may account for the different ranking using much of the same data set.

Guelph was listed in the Top 25 for Health, Taxes and Commute, but failed to break the Top 10 in any category.

Neighbouring city Kitchener ranked 181 on this year’s list, while Waterloo was ranked at 52. MoneySense ranked Cambridge at 200 and Milton as sixth.

Earlier this year, MoneySense named Guelph Number 4 in its Top 25 cities to buy real estate in Canada.
