The Guelph Film Festival returns Friday, bigger and better than ever, say organizers.

The festival has expanded from four days to nine this year and includes documentaries from around the world, visiting directors, an animated children’s shorts program that now includes a French language series.

This year’s programming focuses on unique communities, says a press release from organizers.

“By seeing the challenges and successes of these varied groups, we hope to introduce our audience to diverse world-views, challenge assumptions, and find connections both close to home and far off places,” the release said.

The festival opens with a concert by Lemon Bucket Orkestra on Friday, Nov. 10. The following evening, we will be screening the film Spettacolo with a concert by Timber Timbre.

Other highlights include:

- A Gastronomic Adventure with Nordic Food Lab with a pre-film moveable feast through downtown Guelph with Taste Detours. Reserved seating at Bugs for tour attendees. (www.tastedetours.ca)

- Pocket Films: A series of short films, played on loop for the duration of the Guelph Film Festival in three small and unique venues: Matthew’s Barbershop, Red Brick Cafe, and the Capacity 3 Gallery.

- A Trio of Films by female indigenous filmmakers: Birth of a Family with visiting director Tasha Hubbard, Our People Will Be Healed, and The Road Forward. All three films will be screened at the Art Gallery of Guelph.

- Transported: Objects of Meaning and the Immigrant Experience: A series of five short films highlighting the immigrant experience with a focus on storytelling around an object brought to Canada that has personal significance.

Advance tickets available for evening screenings at the Bookshelf or online at guelphfilmfestival.ca. Afternoon screenings are at the door. Tickets range from $5-15, passes $45-65.
