The Guelph Green Party riding has its first person seeking to be its candidate in the next federal election.

Michelle Bowman, an ecologist concerned with the government’s ‘mismatch’ been evidence and policy, is the first person to throw their hat into the rink seeking the nomination.

She’s been taking part in canvassing, event planning, communications, policy proposals and fundraising for the Guelph Greens since 2017.

The Guelph Greens Electoral District Association has opened nominations for the next federal election and is supporting the Green Party of Canada’s Time to Run campaign, a nationwide campaign that aims to recruit a new generation of diverse and talented community leaders.

“In Guelph, this might look like a community member who is active in volunteering or donating to causes the Green Party of Canada advocates for, like protecting Guelph’s water from foreign sale; working to house Guelph’s residents, seniors and families in housing that is affordable and right for their needs, or working to address systemic inequities in our Community,” said Candice Lepage, secretary of the Guelph Greens EDA, in a press release.

Lepage said the Guelph Greens EDA has no date to close the nominations because an election may be called at any time between now and the next scheduled election in the fall of 2023.

“We would like to give people an opportunity to join the race rather than close it too early,” said Lepage.

The Time to Run campaign allows candidates to nominate themselves or someone else in the community.

In the 2019 election, the Guelph Greens bagged 25 per cent of the votes in the city but lost to Liberal MP Lloyd Longfield who had 45 per cent of the votes.

“We know that Guelph has many people who are doing extraordinary work and putting their communities first, day in and day out. That person could make a real difference in Parliament and we are looking for them to be nominated, or consider running for the Green Party of Canada to represent Guelph in Ottawa,” said Lepage.
