If you're not well, don't visit patients while at the hospital.

That's the sentiment from Guelph General Hospital, declaring a COVID-19 outbreak in its 7 East unit after three patients got the virus while in hospital.

"In at least two of the cases, it appears to be connected to the patients having unwell visitors," hospital spokesperson Perry Hagerman told GuelphToday via email.

The hospital said we all have a role to play in keeping patients safe, and while essential care partners are welcome, "anyone unwell for any reason should not come to visit."

"We do offer virtual visiting as an option," Hagerman added. "Essential care partners who visit in person must not only be well but also wear a hospital-provided mask at all times. There is to be no eating or drinking while in the patient’s room."

He goes on to say steps are being taken in response to the outbreak, including testing of other patients in the unit and closing the unit to all visitors except for those on compassionate grounds.

There's also an increase in cleaning being done, including frequent cleaning of high touch and high traffic areas.
