Guelph IndyCar driver Robert Wickens reaches out to fans while recovering from crash

IndyCar driver Wickens fractured his spinal cord and neck, as well as seven other serious injuries, when he crashed at Pocono Raceway.

Guelph IndyCar driver Robert Wickens is thanking fans for their support in his first video appearance since his dramatic August crash.

Wickens appears in a hospital bed with a neck brace as he addresses his fans in a video posted to his Twitter account @robertwickns.

"I just wanted to say that all of your kind words and your positivity have meant the world to me and my family," said Wickens in the video.

Wickens said he is trying to get back to 100 per cent health and into a race car once again.

"I don't know what the future holds for me — it's going to be a very long road to recovery," he said.

Wickens fractured his spinal cord and neck, as well as seven other serious injuries, when he crashed his Schmidt Peterson Motorsports race car at Pocono Raceway on Aug. 19.

Among the injuries are a thoracic spinal fracture, a fractured neck, tibia and fibula fractures to both legs and a fractured right forearm.

In a statement made earlier this month, Schmidt Peterson said it is holding Wickens' No. 6 car for his return, however long that takes.
