A performance at Silence on Thursday kicks off four days of creative music and programming for the 26th anniversary of the Guelph Jazz Festival and Colloquium.
The lead-off performance by Brampton-born John Kameel Farah is a harpsichord solo and will combine Renaissance, Baroque, and Contemporary Classical repertoires, as well as Middle-Eastern musical traditions.
The concert begins at 3 p.m. on Thursday Sept. 12 at Silence. Tickets for that performance are $15 general admission, $10 for students, seniors, and the under-waged.
At 11 a.m. on Saturday, Berlin-based Farah returns for a second show, this time at St. George’s Church, where he will play a combination of electronics and the splendid Cassavant pipe organ at the church, part of a ‘pipe-themed’ double-bill with the Breton bagpipe virtuoso, Erwan Keravec. Tickets are $25 general admission, $20 for students, seniors, and the under-waged.
On Friday, Eighth Street Orchestra will play a free show at University of Guelph’s Branion Plaza at 12 p.m. The band features a number of Guelphites, including Nolan Murphy on trombone and sousaphone and Kaelin Murphy on trumpet.
At 8 p.m. on Friday, a double-bill of Brodie West Quintet, as well as Ingrid Laubrock, Tom Rainey & Hank Roberts, will fill the Cooperators Hall at the River Run Centre. Tickets are $35 general admission, $30 for students, seniors, and the under-waged.
As part of the 'Around Town' program, the Guelph-based Valet Jazz Quartet (pictured) will be playing Manhattans at 8 p.m.
From 7 p.m. to midnight on Friday is the Friday Night Street Music Party in Market Square, featuring Chippewa Travellers, Urban Science Brass Band, Maracatu Mar Aberto and Eighth Street Orchestra.
On Saturday, a full slate of free shows run at Market Square from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., including the kickoff show by the Kidsability ‘Play Who You Are’ Ensemble with Richard Burrows. At 2 p.m., the Guelph Youth Jazz Ensemble with Marianne Trudel will play a free show in the square.
The final performance of the festival will be held on Sunday — a double bill of Malcolm Goldstein and Rainer Wiens, as well as Erwan Keravec with Hamid Drake — at Guelph Youth Music Centre. Tickets are $25 general admission, $20 for students, seniors, and the under-waged.
