A Guelph man died in custody last week at Maplehurst Correctional Facility in Milton.

Dominic Strickland-Prescod, 26, passed away on May 15.

A cause of death has not been released and an investigation is ongoing.

A Guelph police spokesperson confirmed that Strickland-Prescod was taken into custody and sent to Maplehurst on May 13 after his bail was revoked in  Guelph related to a number of outstanding criminal matters.

Andrew Morrison, media relations officer at the Ministry of the Solicitor General, confirmed that paramedics were called to the Maplehurst Correctional Complex on May 15 after a male inmate was found in medical distress and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Morrison said it is not appropriate for the ministry to comment on the issue further as there are a number of investigations underway.

“If a death involving an inmate occurs, it is the subject of multiple investigations. The Office of the Chief Coroner conducts a death investigation to determine the cause and manner of death,” said Morrison.

“The ministry conducts an internal investigation to determine whether all ministry policies and procedures were followed with respect to the care and custody of the deceased. The local police may investigate to determine if the death was the result of any criminal activity.”

Earlier this month Guelph police issued a high-risk offender alert to the public about Strickland-Prescod after he was released on bail May 4 on a number of outstanding charges.
