Guelph man faces 36 charges related to credit card theft

credit card theft or fraud

Jake Malott, 23, is facing a staggering number of charges after being arrested early Monday by Guelph Police.

Malott has spent most of his 20s in trouble with the law. He has just been charged with 36 criminal counts, all stemming from recent alleged malfeasance involving stolen credit cards. He was arrested at around 1:40 a.m. Monday on Carden Street in the downtown.

He faces twelve counts of possession of credit cards, fourteen counts of fraud under $5,000, and two counts of possession of credit card data. A pair of break and enter charges, as well as two breach of probation charges and one count of possession of break and enter tools, among other charges, have also been laid against him.

He was to appear in bail court on Tuesday.

Guelph Police spokesperson Const. Mike Gatto said in an email Monday that the charges stem from multiple incidents in mid-March, and relate mostly to alleged small credit card purchases. Guelph Police allege that a residence was broken into, as was a building where cars were entered and credit cards stolen.

Last year, Malott was charged with theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property, possession of break in instruments, and concealing and carrying a dangerous weapon.

When he was 20, the young man was charged with assault in an incident involving the theft of a pair of shoes off the feet of an acquaintance in the Old Quebec Street Mall. He pleaded guilty.

Meanwhile, in the week just past, Guelph Police officers were involved in 1,239 incidents, from traffic stops and accidental 911 calls, to domestic disturbances and break and enters.

From March 22 to March 28 there were nine break and enter incidents and nine fraud calls investigated, eight fight calls, six incidents of public intoxication, 18 unwanted person calls, 25 domestic disturbances, 15 motor vehicle collisions, 27 noise complaints, and six shoplifting calls.

There were a total of 33 arrests.
