Guelph Police canine unit on scene of Elizabeth Street fire (5 photos, updated)

Elizabeth Street was closed off near Wheeler Avenue to accommodate the fire and police vehicles

7 p.m. update

Guelph Fire Department reports the fire at 191 Elizabeth Street was quickly brought under control and subsequently extinguished.

"Firefighters performed a fast and aggressive attack which resulted in the fire being contained to the outside of the home," says a fire department spokesperson. "As a result, there was minimal damage to the interior of the home."

Guelph fire investigators and police service personnel are currently investigating the cause of the fire and remain on scene.

A damage estimate and the cause of the fire will be released later.

The cause of the fire, along with a damage estimate, is under investigation by Guelph Fire Investigators and Guelph Police Service. Both agencies remain on scene and will follow up at a later date.

Original story: 1:52 p.m.

A police canine unit was on the scene of an afternoon deck fire that occurred Friday at 191 Elizabeth Street.

The fire was small and isolated to the back deck, said platoon chief Ken Standring of the Guelph Fire Department.

“It's under investigation right now by our Fire Prevention bureau,” said Standring.

Elizabeth Street was closed off near Wheeler Avenue to accommodate the fire and police vehicles.

The fire call came in at about 12:10 p.m. and the street was still closed as of about 1:15 p.m.

As firefighters were on the scene, so too were members of the Guelph Police Service, including a canine unit that was seen at the site of the fire and on neighbouring properties.

"They are conducting an investigation as well," said Standring of the police presence.

Guelph Police did not confirm there was an active investigation, but said they will offer more information as it becomes available.

In 2015, an arson charge was laid as a result of a fire at the same address.
