Guelph radio's living legend signs off for the final time

But Larry Mellott will still be back to call Guelph Storm games

Guelph's radio's living legend Larry Mellott signed off from his afternoon show at 1460 for the last time Friday.

The front lobby looked festive with balloons and banners as Mellott, who is retiring, called it a day.

Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie dropped by to congratulate Mellott.

“Thank you for always being a champion for this community, the Storm's play-by-play man, an announcer and program director for CJOY. You are a Guelph Legend, and you will be missed by many," the mayor said.

When asked, how it felt to be on the airwaves one last time,  Mellott commented: “A little strange, I am wondering how all of those years went by so fast!”

Mellott has worked in the radio business for almost 50 years. He started in 1970 for CHLO in St. Thomas.

Guelphite’s first heard that familiar voice on CJOY radio in December, 1974.

Travelling West with his young growing family in 1982 to work at a radio station out there then returned to the Royal City in August of 1988 and has made many memories over the years with fellow listeners, co-workers, music business and hockey people within his career.

Mellott has seen a lot of changes in the industry.

“I began with records, to CDs to mp3 files,” he said.

Brad Hulme, program director for Magic 106.1 posted the on Facebook: “It’s a bittersweet day for all of us here at 1460 CJOY and Magic 106.1FM as we say 'see ya later' to our good friend, Larry Mellott.”

Hulme also said to Mellott, “we will see you in September when you will be returning to the airwaves, broadcasting the Guelph Storm games."

Mellott is looking forward to spending more time with his wife, family and travelling this summer.
