GUELPH SEED LIBRARY

Guelph’s new Seed Library will be presenting the film SEED: The Untold Story at the Bookshelf Cinema, Wednesday April 25 at 7:30 p.m. There will be a discussion about seed libraries and seed saving following the movie at Miijida. The purpose of the screening is to raise money and awareness about Guelph’s new Seed Library and the Grow Garden. Cost of tickets is $20. They are available for purchase at the Guelph Tool Library or online.
The Guelph Seed Library is a new project created by Transition Guelph’s Urban Food Working Group. It will be housed in the Guelph Tool Library, 131 Ontario St. Seed Libraries allow members to take out seeds, plant them, then harvest the seed to be returned to the library for the next year’s seed supply.
“We are losing seed biodiversity through monocultures and large seed corporations,” says the Guelph Seed Library coordinator Lisa Conroy. “Saving seeds gives us control over where our seeds come from and how they are produced.”
The Seed Library will allow local residents to play a key role in local seed biodiversity as well as giving them access to a wide range of open pollinated, non-GMO seeds.
“Everyone should have access to grow their own food,” says Mike Barber, the Grow Garden project lead. “That is why there are no membership fees for both the Grow Garden and the Seed Library.”
