The 16-year-old male that died as a result of a helicopter crash in Hawaii last Thursday has been identified as a Guelph high school student.

While the teen's identity has not been publicly revealed, several media reports identify him as a student at Centennial CVI high school.

The Upper Grand District School Board issued the following statement Tuesday:

"We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of one of our students and our hearts go out to the student’s family. Supports are available for our staff and students through the Board’s Crisis Response team, guidance counsellors, social workers and child and youth counsellors. We ask that the media please respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time."

The teen and three family members on vacation in Hawaii were aboard the helicopter when it crashed into the water near the Pearl Harbor Visitors Center.

Three family members were taken to hospital and one treated and released. The pilot was also injured.

A spokesperson at the Pali Momi Medical Center said the family had chosen to donate the teen's organs.

The crash remains under investigation.
