A Guelph woman says she is pleasantly surprised after getting back a stolen jacket that belonged to her late father after an appeal made to social media.
Emma Nip picked up the blue Columbia windbreaker on Wednesday after being contacted by a man who said he saw someone with the jacket and appealed for its return.
“He said he knew someone who had gotten a jacket that looks like mine recently. He convinced the person to give it to him and sent me photos and it was the right jacket,” said Emma.
“It was awesome. He pulled it out of his bag and I immediately started crying,” she said. “I had agreed there was no questions asked, so I don’t know anything more than that.”
The jacket is about 30 years old and was worn by her father Nelson Nip before his death almost nine years ago. Emma said it was one of the few items of her father’s that she has.
It was stolen from Emma’s car last month from the parking lot of an apartment complex near The Boathouse in Guelph.
Emma kept the two-tone blue jacket in her car because she often used it while walking dogs. She said there was nothing of value in the pockets.
“I really didn’t think I was going to see it again, I thought it was a lost cause. I assumed it was probably discarded somewhere,” said Emma. “I was actually very surprised I got it back.”
“I probably won’t be leaving it in my car anymore, just in case,” she added.
Emma said she is overwhelmed by the support shown by Guelphites, who shared her story widely on social media.
“I just want to say thank you to everyone who shared and for all of the positivity. It outshines all of the negativity,” said Emma. “I am so happy.”
