The Guelph Youth Music Centre (GYMC) will be hosting for the first time, KW Big Band Theory on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. The concert will also feature jazz vocalist Derek Hines and is sponsored by Cascades.

“This is the fall event not to be missed,” commented Gabriella Currie-Ziegler, Executive Director of the GYMC. “It’s going to be a fantastic evening with raise the roof jazz by a talented band and great vocals by Derek Hines a la Frank Sinatra. We’re going to fill the place, so get your tickets today and be prepared to be blown away!”

Big Band Theory has brought a great variety of programs to their audiences from Count Basie and the old swing dance classics, to punchy horn bands of the 70s and 80s, as well as contemporary big ban arrangements by Gordon Goodwin and L.A.’s Big Phat Band.

Derek Hines released his first album in 2017, The Long Journey Home, which is a collection of gospel music arranged Big Band style. Hines is much in demand and has performed on many occasions. After forming Derek Hines Quintet, he performed on cruise ships for almost five years, sailing all over the world. He is also a cook and has worked at Manulife and Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory. He launched his own business as an owner/chef of Boutique Catering in Waterloo.

Starting at 7 p.m., the jazz concert includes hors d’oeuvres and beverages in the GYMC’s upper foyer, followed by the concert in the Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. and desserts at intermission. Beer and wine will be available for sale.

Tickets are $30/person, with funds going towards music programming at the GYMC. To purchase tickets go to squareup.com/store/gymc. For more information, visit gymc.ca or call 519-837-1119.
