Guelph's Andrea Seccafien is Rio bound.

Seccafien, a graduate of Bishop Macdonell high school, won the women's 5,000 metre event at the Canadian Olympic Track and Field trials in Edmonton Thursday night.

The top three finishers in the race were separated by less than a second, with Seccafien crossing in 16:00.41.

Seccafien told The Canadian Press that the feeling was "surreal."

She has droppped her time in the event a huge 35 seconds this season after sitting out all of last season with a heel injury.

"I just can appreciate racing so much more, I didn't race at all last year," she said. "You just kind of realize how much it means to you when you have it taken away for an entire year.

"It also gave the opportunity to work on strength and my form. I'm a much more powerful runner."

Earlier this year Seccafien told GuelphToday.com that changes she made brought her to a new level.

"I've switched training groups so now I'm in Toronto with the University of Toronto Track Club so there are a lot of changes with that," she said.

Also I was injured last year in 2015 and then when I came back I just kind of committed myself to doing the little things. I slept a lot more. I started stretching, eating better. It was just kind of taking better care of myself because once you go through an injury you kind of realize that you're not invincible any more."
