Guelph has the second-lowest unemployment rate of any metropolitan area in the county according to the latest figures released by Stats Canada.

The figures, released last week, show that Guelph's unemployment rate for December was 3.9 per cent, just behind Quebec City's 3.8 per cent.

The national unemployment rate in December was 6.9 per cent.

The Stats Canada figures also show that Guelph has the second-highest full-time employment rate in the country, with 55.9 per cent of its population employed full time. Regina was highest at 57.2.

The statistics are for municipalities with a population over 100,000. The figures are not seasonally adjusted.

Stats Canada says 73,400 of Guelph's 131,000 residents are employed full time.

Mayor Cam Guthrie said it takes the work of many different elements to make Guelph the place to come and "set up shop."

"It speaks to the culture of change at City Hall and it obviously speaks to what's happening overall with all the stakeholders: the Chamber of Commerce, Innovation Guelph and the university, the development association," the Mayor said. "All of them are creating this atmosphere that Guelph is the place to come and do business and set up shop.

"These never percolate or rise to the top by accident. They happen because of so many moving parts, so many people, all working together to create a community to attract businesses that then attract jobs."
