(Starting Dec. 22 and ending Dec. 31, GuelphToday will count down its top 10 stories of 2017.)

Guelph progressive metal band Mandroid Echostar stepped into the national spotlight when they won a Juno Award last spring.

The band is made up of six friends from Guelph and other parts of Wellington County: Sam Pattison, Stephen Richards, Michael Ciccia, James Krul, Matt H-K and Adam Richards.

They had been together six years and were on temporary hiatus while lead singer Ciccia underwent throat surgery and recovery that would prevent them from performing for a few months.

Their album Coral Throne was chosen Best Heavy Metal Album of the year at the Juno Awards held in Ottawa in May.
