Cam Guthrie kicked off his mayoral re-election campaign with a roller skating party. He's joined here by his wife, Rachel Guthrie.

A roller skating party, held to launch Cam Guthrie's mayoral re-election campaign, at Exhibition Arena attracted more than 200 participants on Saturday evening.

"The last couple years, as we all know, has been really tough," Guthrie said in remarks to the crowd. "I just want to have a party where I know everybody is going to be smiling. The last hour in this room, that's exactly what's happened."

Roller skating is a "really great pastime" and an opportunity for people get out and have fun, Guthrie said.

"I knew this would be a big draw."

Skaters had a variety of experience levels, with some quite unsteady on their wheels and others whipping around the floor, dancing as they went.

The free event, which included skate rentals and a photographer, was initially planned to be held on the splash pad surface outside City Hall, but it was moved to Exhibition Arena.

The idea for a roller skating party started with a social media post back in January 2021, which got a lot of attention.

Currently, Guthrie is the lone candidate registered for mayor in the October municipal election. The deadline to file nomination papers is 2 p.m. on Aug. 19.
