EDEN MILLS WRITERS' FESTIVAL

The Eden Mills Writers’ Festival has been described as “a quirky little gem”, and “the most unique literary destination in the province”. An hour west of Toronto, Eden Mills has hosted a literary festival for thirty-one years, and on Sunday Sept. 8, 2019, more than 50 authors will make their way to the little village.
The 2019 festival presents a sensational lineup of programming for readers and writers of all ages. Running from noon – 6 p.m., the event includes 24 unique sets, featuring three to four authors per set, in locations throughout the village, along the banks of the Eramosa River.
Emma Donoghue returns to Eden Mills with Akin, her first contemporary novel since Room, along with best-selling Terry Fallis (Albatross) and Giller-winner Lynn Coady (Watching You Without Me). Lee Maracle, recently nominated for the Neustadt Prize, presents Hope Matters alongside Indigenous poets Armand Garnet Ruffo (Treaty #), Garry Thomas Morse (Safety Sand), and Shannon Webb-Campbell (I Am a Body of Land).
Judith Pereira, The Globe and Mail’s Books Editor, hosts “Before and After”, featuring the new non-fictions titles by Cecil Foster (They Call Me George), Linden MacIntyre (The Wake), and Catherine Porter (A Girl Named Lovely). Amy Jones (Every Little Piece of Me), Karen McBride (Crow Winter) and Anakana Schofield (Bina) discuss the strong female characters in their new novels in a set called “Her Story”. CBC’s Mary Ito hosts “With Great Fortitude”, which showcases compelling stories of resilience, with memoirs by Jesse Thistle (From the Ashes), Kristen Worley (Woman Enough), and Samra Zafar, (A Good Wife).
Other programming highlights include “Human/Nature”, which explores the nuanced storytelling and evocative illustrations of graphic novelists Michael DeForge (Stunt), Renee Nault (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Sylvia Nickerson (Creation).
A family-friendly festival, the lineup for children includes a including a 20th anniversary ‘birthday party’ for Stella, of the Stella and Sam series, with beloved children’s author Marie-Louise Gay. Authors Kevin Sylvester (Garantua Jr!), Catherine Hernandez (I Promise) and zoologist Jess Keating (Nikki Tesla and the Ferret-Proof Death Ray) also provide readings and interactive fun. At our YA site, two panels, “The Things We Do for Love” and “The Light and Dark of YA”, will feature authors Brian Francis (Break in Case of Emergency), Tim Wynne-Jones (The Starlight Claim), Sarah Henstra (We Contain Multitudes), and more!
Rounding out the festival weekend is a conversation between Marina Endicott (The Difference) and Guy Gavriel Kay (A Brightness Long Ago) for the Sept. 6 opening night in Guelph. And on Saturday Sept. 7, authors Cecil Foster, Marie-Louise Gay, Alix Ohlin and Anakana Schofield lead writing workshops for aspiring writers.
