GUELPH HUMANE SOCIETY
The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is offering the opportunity to not only adopt animals, but to adopt kennels as well. The Happy Tails Begin Here – Kennel Adoption Program allows individuals, groups or businesses to adopt a cage or kennel in the new GHS building on a yearly basis, allowing people to visit the spot they adopt while supporting vulnerable animals in the community.
“It’s another unique way for people to commit to helping animals in our community,” says Jen Fraser, Manager of Donor Relations at GHS. “When you adopt a kennel or cage, you get to customize a plaque that will go on the space you adopt. Not only can you visit to see the plaque – but the public will be able to see it as well.”
Current kennel adopters have customized their plaques to honour loved ones, including pets. Several businesses in Guelph, including Linamar, Alliance Roofing, and RLB, have adopted cages and included their company name and/or logo on their plaques.
“For companies, this is a great, visible way of showing the community that this is a cause you care about,” adds Fraser. “The public comes in to adopt a cat, dog, or bunny, and they can see that your business cares about the wellbeing of animals. That’s important to people.”
For individuals, kennel adoption can be a gift for an animal lover in your life, or a way of honouring the memory of a loved one.
“I decided to adopt a cage in memory of Shakes as a way to keep her specialness alive,” wrote Shannon Kornelsen, in a testimonial on the GHS website. “I perfectly recall the day I walked into the GHS cat room, back in 2003, and saw this elegant creature studying me with wide, emerald eyes from one of the cages. I instantly knew she was ‘my cat’, and even said it out loud. I like to think she instantly knew I was her human. Shakes and I shared our lives together until she passed away in 2020…. When I learned I could adopt a cat cage at GHS, my heart leapt at the opportunity. Now, all my feelings of missing Shakes are accompanied by a sense of peace that she is still 'here' in the world in this small way. I take great comfort in imagining all the cats that Shakes' photo keeps watch over.”
Kennels and cages can be adopted in the dog adoption rooms, cat adoption room, and small animal room, as well as less public spaces. For a list of prices and locations, you can visit www.guelphhumane.ca/kennels to learn more.
