Residents can find a new book to read and help support a literacy program for others in prison in an upcoming book sale from Helper Bees.

Helper Bees is hosting a $2 book sale on April 23 at Church of the Apostles. The event is bookmarked on World Book Day and will run from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

A release from Helper Bees explains the book sale aims to support literacy programs in provincial jails in southern Ontario by selling books that are frequently donated, including best sellers, detective stories and other novels.

The proceeds will be used to purchase books for these literacy programs, such as technical books and books in other languages, which are typically not donated, adds the release.

“We have been collecting books for a few years but felt that this was a great opportunity to make a substantial contribution to the Books for Inmates Program. We hope to have over 4,000 books to sell and they are all priced at $2 each,” said Helper Bees coordinator John Dennis.

"What a blessing for the church to have a role to play in this exchange of words, of knowledge, of ideas, and of stories. So many opportunities to learn, or dream, or see the world from a new perspective," said Church of the Apostles Rector Naomi Miller, in the release.

The Books for Inmates Program is a volunteer organization that collects books throughout the region and takes them to seven different locations in southern Ontario. The program has delivered almost 30,000 books to literacy programs and libraries at the seven institutions.

The church is accepting books until Thursday April 21.  Books can be dropped off at the Church of the Apostles, 86 Glasgow Street North, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Books can also be dropped off on Sunday mornings.
