Investigation into Old Marina fire continues

Fire chief Tom Mulvey said he expects to have an answer by the end of the week as excavators get in to clear out debris

PUSLINCH – Puslinch’s fire chief is expecting to have more answers to the cause of the Old Marina fire this week as excavators get on site to dig up the remains to allow a more thorough investigation.

A little over a week since the Old Marina Restaurant on Puslinch Lake was razed by a massive fire causing an estimated $2 million in damage, there isn’t an officially known cause for the fire.

Puslinch fire chief Tom Mulvey said excavators are expected to come in this week which means investigators will be able to get to where the fire started, which is suspected to be in the basement.

“We have some information from people who were on site the day of the fire so we have a good idea where the area of origin is,” Mulvey said. “We need to clear that out so it’s safe to go in there to have a look, see the area of origin in which time we will hopefully be able to determine what the actual cause was.”

Mulvey stressed this fire is in no way suspicious and explained the process for getting this next part of the investigation going is a bit slower than usual because the fire department is working with two insurance companies — one for the business and one for the building owner — instead of one which means there’s a little more coordination needed.

The fire chief said he’s hoping to have answers by Friday, whether that is a cause or if it will be undetermined.

Looking back on the day of the fire, Mulvey said he’s thankful for everyone who was involved in the evacuation and fighting the fire and is grateful there were no injuries for anyone involved either.
