The Guelph Black Heritage Society and OPIRG Guelph present the Black Experience Project panel discussion on Thursday, Nov. 23, 2017 at MacKinnon Building Room 120, University of Guelph. The Environics Institute and Ryerson's Diversity Institute, with the United Way of Toronto and York Region, the YMCA of Greater Toronto and York, and the Jean Augustine Chair at York University released a ground-breaking research study focusing on the Black community in the GTA.

The study included more than a 1,500 in depth interviews providing both empirical data and compelling narratives. The results of the Black Experience Project are intended to provide valuable insight and direction when identifying policies and other initiatives that will contribute to the health and vibrancy of the Black community, which will in turn increase the social and economic capital of Blacks in the GTA who have been steadily contributing to the region.

This event will be moderated by Marva Wisdom, director of outreach and engagement for the Black Experience Project. Doors open at 6 p.m., followed by a video presentation starting at 6:30 p.m. The results of the survey and panel discussion will be from 7:30 – 8:30 pm. Free admission. Donations welcome. Proceeds from this event will go towards GBHS programming and the ongoing Rampin’ it Up! Campaign to make Heritage Hall accessible.

Heritage Hall, located at 83 Essex St., was formerly known as the British Methodist Episcopal Church, a significant destination on the 19th century Underground Railroad slave escape route. Since 2011, the Guelph Black Heritage Society has striven to create a cultural, historical and social community centre at Heritage Hall. Community rentals help support the hall. Greater access will ramp up that support and enhance the versatility of Heritage Hall.
