Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health is throwing its support behind the creation of a mandatory vaccine certificate, even if that means implementing one on a region-by-region basis.

Along with the other public health regions in Ontario, the WDGPH unit is calling for the creation of vaccination certificates from the provincial government.

WDGPH said they are exploring interim possibilities in the meantime.

“Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health supports the use of tools and vaccine policies which can help to drive vaccination rates and keep our local businesses open and safe,” said Anna Vanderlaan, acting communications manager at Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health. “We support a provincial approach to avoid regional differences, however in the interim we are exploring how to utilize COVax vaccine receipts locally."

The pressure from Ontario’s 34 health units comes as the provincial government lags in the establishment of a vaccine certificate.

The call for a universal provincial vaccine passport comes amidst the challenges of combating the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic while keeping local businesses open.

WDGPH said it strongly supports a provincial vaccine passport to avoid regional differences.
