TOASTMASTERS INTERNATIONAL

Four contestants from Guelph and Fergus are competing to advance to the semifinal round of the 2021 World Championship of Public Speaking.

Steve Dyck and Tim O'Connor, from Guelph, and Neil Dunsmore and Lynne Hollett, from Fergus, have already won in two rounds of competition at local Toastmasters International clubs. That earned them the opportunity to participate in the District 86 Division T International Speech contest on March 26, 2021.

Dyck, O’Connor, Dunsmore and Hollett will face off against four other Toastmasters from Grey and Bruce counties, and Waterloo Region in the 2021 Division T event:

  • Lishui Springford, Durham, Ont.
  • Jane Herron, Tara, Ont.
  • Piyush Nanda, Cambridge, Ont.
  • Sue Wright, Kitchener, Ont.

The winner from the March 26 Division T contest next competes online at the District 86 Toastmasters Conference, April 18, 2021, against speakers across much of Ontario. That’s the final hurdle to competing in the world championship's semi and final rounds during the annual Toastmasters International Convention, Aug. 23-28, 2021.

"Speaking contests are bedrock part of the personal growth members experience in Toastmasters International,” said Dave Weber, a member of High Noon Toastmasters in Cambridge.  He’s also director of Toastmasters District, 86 Division T, overseeing 16 clubs across Waterloo Region and Wellington, Grey and Bruce counties.

Toastmasters International members learn, practice and receive feedback about their public speaking and presentation skills during weekly club meetings.

“At Toastmasters, we support members as they challenge themselves with speaking projects, building confidence to speak in front of audiences, both online and in-person,” Weber said. “Whether it’s delivering a multi-million-dollar business pitch at work or a toast at a family event, Toastmasters members learn communication skills for success.”
