Lloyd Longfield, Member of Parliament for Guelph is pleased to announce that the Transportation Modernization Act is now law in Canada. This legislation will benefit air travellers for years to come, improve rail safety, and provide new tools and benefits for rail shippers.

We are implementing new air passenger rights to improve experience and ensure travelers are treated with respect and fairness. Passengers are entitled to clear, consistent, transparent and enforceable compensation, as well as minimum standards of treatment when things do not go as planned.

We are implementing new standards to further improve rail safety in Canada. This includes mandating the installation of Locomotive Voice and Video Recorders (LVVR) across the federally regulated rail industry, which will allow us to better understand events leading up to an accident and help prevent future accidents.

We understand the importance of an efficient and reliable rail system for moving Canadian grain and the humane transport of animals to the marketplace. We are going even further to ensure that producers and shippers of all commodities, from grain to forest products to minerals, have the tools they need to thrive.

The Transportation Modernization Act is an important first step in the implementation of Transportation 2030, our government’s strategy for the future of transportation in Canada.

Quotes

“The Government of Canada is committed to providing Canadians with a safe, secure, innovative and integrated transportation system that promotes trade, economic growth and a cleaner environment.” - The Honourable Marc Garneau, minister of Transport

"It is so good to see us landing in a place that will help farmers get their product to market, but also manufacturers in Guelph, mines in Northern Ontario, and any business relying on the rail to get goods to port and from there to international markets. I was pleased to speak on this bill twice in the House of Commons, as well as participate in emergency meetings this winter in the AGRI Committee to support C-49’s speedy implementation." - Lloyd Longfield, member of Parliament for Guelph
