Man accused of murdering Guelph hotel employee denied bail

Raja Dosanjh accused in the murder of Comfort Inn employee in 2016

The man accused of first-degree murder in the shooting death of a Guelph hotel employee in March of 2016 was denied bail Friday.

Raja Dosanjh, 25, was arrested in British Columbia a year after Ali Sunderani, 35, was found shot outside the main doors of the Comfort Inn on Silvercreek Parkway North. He died a day later of his wounds in a Guelph hospital.

Justice Gordon Lemon read his written decision on the bail application at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Publication of details of the decision and of any potential evidence heard in court is prohibited under a publication ban.

A preliminary hearing in the matter is set for four weeks in March.

The slightly-built Dosanjh, standing roughly six-feet-five, wore a grey suit, grey dress shirt and no tie in court Friday. He sported horn-rimmed glasses and had neatly-cropped and gelled hair for the brief appearance.

He briefly smiled at three family members sitting in the court room as he was led in by police.

There was a heavy police presence at the Woolwich Street courthouse and a series of unmarked SUVs drove Dosanjh to and from the appearance. People entering the courthouse had to pass through security checks to do so.

The shooting of Sunderani took place on a snowy Tuesday afternoon on March 1, 2016.

At the time police said there was not believed to be any risk to public safety as they combed the area for clues and suspects.

Sunderani was listed as a manager of the hotel.

Dosanjh was arrested in Burnaby, B.C., in February of this year by RCMP officers.
