Man faces charges after fleeing police in car, then on foot

A Guelph man faces several charges after colliding with another vehicle while fleeing police on Friday.

Approximately 4:20 p.m., Guelph police were patrolling on Silvercreek Parkway North when they spotted a male driving. Officers knew him to be a prohibited driver and also wanted on outstanding warrants. After making eye contact with an officer the male fled at a high rate of speed.

Officers did not pursue the vehicle in the interest of public safety. Information was received the vehicle ran two red lights and was involved in a collision with another vehicle at Speedvale Avenue East and Imperial Road North. There were no injuries reported.

The male eventually abandoned the vehicle but was located with the assistance of a canine unit. A search incident to arrest revealed he was in possession of crack cocaine.

A 31-year-old Guelph man faces charges including dangerous driving, flight from police, driving while prohibited, failing to stop at a collision and possessing a controlled substance. He was held to appear in bail court Monday.
