Maple sap, frisky horses, and mucky roads

False spring spurs wanderlust

One good thing about a false spring – and make no mistake, that is what we are experiencing – is that it kick-starts a sense of wanderlust. And wanderlust can so easily lead to drives and explorations in the country.

Sunday morning - with the temperatures rising well above zero, and with the sun, the blessed sun, blazing up above - proved to be a perfect day for a photographic junket in the countryside around Maryhill, Winterbourne, and Conestogo. All of these towns are within a few minutes of Guelph.

The water is running rather high in the Grand River. The horses are out taking the sun, as are the people. Back roads are slick with mud, snow is receding on the fields, and maple syrup producers are scrambling to catch the early run of sap.

By Wednesday, Wellington County can expect a high in the teens, but there is snow in the forecast about a week from now. With temperatures above zero during the day, and below zero at night, the maple sap should keep flowing for the rest of February.
