Mayor hosting a roller skating party to kick off re-election bid

It happens in Market Square on June 11

Market Square in Guelph is turning back the clock.

Mayor Cam Guthrie is kicking off his re-election campaign with a roller skating party June 11 from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The event will be complete with live music from the 70's, 80's and today, and prizes to be won.

But Guthrie said he is not wanting this to be a "re-elect Cam event."

"This is purely about trying to bring the community together," he told GuelphToday. "But because we are in the midst of a municipal campaign, I thought (of) no better way to kick it off than to put on some roller skates and have a good time dancing."

The idea all started with a social media post back in January 2021, which got a lot of attention.

Anyone wanting to participate are being asked to bring their own roller skates, or use one of the over 200 pairs being provided by Kitchener-based Retro Rollers Inc.

Currently, Guthrie is the lone candidate registered for Mayor in the October municipal election.
