Surrey Street Medical Complex is in for a big change.

Its parent company, 21 Surrey Street Holdings, purchased The Maples Inn at 25 Wellington St. and wihen renovations are complete will offer services in a combined 42,000 sq/ft space.

It will see 25 Wellington St. be the home to a brain injury clinic and an Alzheimer’s patient day facility on the first floor which will be operated by St. Joseph's Health Centre.

The top two floors of the building will be dedicated to active seniors living called Suites at Royal City Park where independent seniors will have on-site support staff  while still being able to live independently.

Managing director at Montik Planning and Development Michael von Teichman said apart from its medical services, the team saw a need to provide a space for able-bodied active seniors who might not want to live alone but still want to have people around them.

“It is not a nursing home, it’s very much for independents so there will be yoga classes and group walks, that kind of stuff but still the care of somebody checking in on you,” said von Teichman.

He said the new changes offer much better use of the building than The Maples Inn did.

“We are going to be on a tight schedule with all the delays caused,” said von Teichman, adding that the new centre hopes to open in February 2021.

He says the team was trying to create a comprehensive medical centre for Downtown Guelph and St.Joseph’s Health Centre happened to be looking for space at the same time.

“So instead of people having to go out, take a bus and then walk to get to one of the medical centres at out in the south end or east and or west end, this is downtown and accessible for everyone,” said von Teichman.

“It’s full and we really believe a downtown medical facility is the best thing for the community. Its free parking and car share and there are seven bike routes all around the medical centre.”
