The Crown corporation that owns the damaged bridge on the 100 steps pedestrian walkway says it is replacing the existing structure.

Metrolinx owns the portion of the walkway that goes over the rail tracks. The walkway has been closed since August and was originally set for reopening at the end of September.

Those plans changed and the new target date is the end of January.

"Metrolinx is in complete support of getting this project done and we are doing everything we can to advocate on behalf of the community," said Metrolinx spokesperson Scott Money in an email.

He said Metrolinx has a lease agreement on the track with CN Rail who contracts out the maintenance of the area to Goderich-Exeter Railway.

"CN Rail and GEXR created a work schedule to repair the bridge starting September 11, replacing bent caps and girders on the bridge. Unfortunately, the work was unable to go ahead as scheduled as GEXR was responding to an emergency in Quebec," Money said.

"During the week of November 6, 2017 a contractor (SEMA) was on site to access and provide a schedule for repair. Upon the investigation, SEMA decided it would be best to replace the existing bridge with a 100 foot Trough Tress steel structure. On November 10 2017, it was confirmed that the bridge would be installed by the end of January 2018."

The City of Guelph has no control over that portion of the popular walkway, which runs between Elizabeth Street and Grove Street.
