Murder charge after VIA station security guard killed (3 photos)

Police arrested a 21-year-old man on scene Wednesday evening

A 63-year-old security guard was killed Wednesday night following an incident at the VIA Rail building at Guelph Central Station in downtown Guelph.

Guelph Police say a 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and will appear in court Thursday morning for a bail hearing.

Cst. Kyle Grant of the Guelph Police Service said that police responded to a call about a disturbance where an adult male was being assaulted behind the rail station at 8:47 p.m.

"The 63-year-old male was working as a security guard at the train station and was located on-scene with life threatening injuries," Grant said. "He was transported to Guelph General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries."

A 21-year-old was arrested at the scene.

Grant said the cause of death is not being revealed at this time and is part of the investigation.
