The city announced Thursday that the Niska Bridge is officially open.

The bridge closed in early 2017 due to safety concerns of the aging structure. A new bridge was installed in 2018.

In addition to the new bridge, the stretch of Niska Road has improved stormwater infrastructure, underground animal crossings and four on-street parking spaces.

The $6 million project was completed on budget, says the city.

"The new bridge has two lanes to allow two-way passage for people driving, and a separated multi-use path for people walking and biking. The road was rebuilt with slight shifts approaching the bridge rather than straight on, a feature that helps reduce traffic speeds," says the city's announcement.

Niska Road is now a truck exclusion zone within city limits and trucks are not permitted on the new bridge.

Police will be enforcing the area.

Abutment stones from the Bailey Bridge were used as heritage design elements in the new bridge, and the city is working on plans to reuse more parts of the oldBailey Bridge in other parts of the city, the city said.
