Following the success of their 2020 Nothing Civil IPA campaign, Wellington Brewery announced on Thursday another batch of its suds will be hitting the shelves with 100 per cent of the profits going toward the Black Health Alliance.
This year’s campaign follows the successful campaign in 2020 during which the sales of Nothing Civil IPA raised $5,415 for Black Lives Matter Canada.
The trio from Lacuna Collective is once again joining the collaboration for the launch of the beer, with the group describing themselves as "three badass, take-no-prisoners black women” who are “the missing piece in the craft beer industry that doesn’t really acknowledge or have space for BIPOC, LGBTQ2IA+ and disabled people”.
“This year we wanted to focus on not only Black mental health but Black health in general,” said Lexi Pham, certified beer sommelier. “It is also currently at the forefront now especially during this pandemic, especially for the Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (BIPOC) community when it comes to the vaccine, which is what everyone should be getting, there is a lot of hesitancy from that demographic because of history trauma.”
The Black Healthcare Alliance is an organization based in North York that is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of Black communities.
Rhe Lacuna Collective said: “We’re all IPA fans and we wanted to create a beer that expressed our taste and approach to craft beer. With so few Black people in the Canadian craft beer scene, we wanted to create a beer that showcased our preference in flavour and style. We also wanted to bring awareness to police brutality and the history of systemic racism with this brew, poem, and label art.”
Nothing Civil IPA is available both online and in-store from Wellington Brewery and at select bars and restaurants while supplies last.
Pham said she expects the beer to be sold for at least about a month.
