There could be as many as 16 legal cannabis shops in Guelph in the near future.

But one of them won’t be at a controversial location on Woolwich Street beside a proposed youth mental health hub.

That location, in a former florist shop, dropped its application with the city's Committee of Adjustment for some necessary vairances and has just reopened as a convenience store.

The company looking to put a cannabis store there, The Cannabist Shop, withdrew its application to the city’s committee of adjustment and has two applications in progress: one on Woodlawn Road and one on Wyndham Street.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario site shows that there are four stores that have been granted authorization to open and 12 other applications still in progress.

SpiritLeaf on Edinburgh Road, Bud’s Cannabis Store on Stone Road and Q-Bud on Wyndham Street have already opened.

A fourth, Canja, has been authorized to open on Surrey Street.

Then there are 12 applications listed as “in progress.”
