OPP seize 4,300 pot plants at commercial operation in Fergus

Police say plants seized were worth $4.3 million. They also seized $250,000 worth of processed cannabis

TOWNSHIP OF CENTRE WELLINGTON, ON) - On Thursday, June 24, 2021, Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) executed a Cannabis Act search warrant at a commercial property on Glengary Crescent in Fergus.

Members of the Wellington County OPP CSCU, Wellington County Crime Unit and uniform officers, with the assistance of Huron Perth and Grey Bruce CSCU's, the Provincial Joint Forces Cannabis Enforcement Team (PJFCET), the OPP Provincial Asset Forfeiture Unit (PAFU) and the West Region OPP Support Unit seized over 4,300 plants worth approximately $4.3 million as well as $250,000 worth of processed cannabis. A large quantity of Canadian currency was also seized.

The County of Wellington Roads Department assisted OPP with the disposal of the cannabis while the Electrical Safety Authority and Centre Wellington Fire and Rescue conducted their own independent investigations.  

The following individuals are charged under the Cannabis Act with cultivate, propagate or harvest any cannabis plant at a place that is not their dwelling house or to offer to do so and possession for the purpose of selling.

  • Wei Chen, 40 years old of Aurora
  • Zhong Xiang Chen, 30 years old of Gwillimbury

The accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice - Guelph July 27, 2021 to answer to the charges.

The PJFCET is responsible for enforcing the cannabis laws and investigating criminal enterprises that exploit or abuse the legal cannabis market.
