Our favourite stories of 2021 #10: a 3,000-pound prank

It was supposed to be a story on an impressive snow sculpture, but it turned into something completely different.

Several people made the comment on a snowy weekend in late November about an pair of impressive snow sculptures outside an Elizabeth Street home.

But when reporter Ariel Deutschmann arrived on the scene to take some photos, she found out the real story, which actually turned out to be much more interesting than some nice snow work.

Turns out University of Guelph women's soccer coach Shayne Campbell was pranked by some of his team, including one whose family owned Bernardi Precast. And those statuesque snow sculptures turned out to be solid concrete, dropped on Campbell's front lawn as a prank while the team was out holding an end-of-season celebratory dinner.

"All of the girls were under the blue spruce waiting for Shayne to arrive," said Shayne's wife Judy Macerollo, "It was a good joke, very funny."
