Dave Beaton's a nice guy. He really is. Unfortunately the city's program manager for forestry and sustainable landscapes had to break the news when the city decided that it no longer wanted people to put fairy doors and painted rocks in city parks and along city trails.

“They always start with a single fairy door and then they turn into a bit of a fairy subdivision. We have them all over the place now,” said Beaton.

"We know it looks magical, but drilling fairy doors into trees in parks and natural areas leaves them vulnerable to disease and pests, adding strain where it's not needed," said the post. "Let's protect nature the way it's protected us this last year by leaving it the way you found it."

The story was one of our more read pieces of the year and a follow-up poll saw more than 2,700 people cast their opinions. Most of those (40 per cent) voted for "Leave nature to its natural beauty."
