Panel discussion on body positivity aimed at fostering a positive relationship with your body

Three local experts will take part in Tuesday's event for adults

Cedar Lily Boutique, a local bra boutique, is stepping away from the bras and into new territory this week when it hosts its first panel discussion titled A Conversation About Body Positivity on Tuesday, July 10.

The event will feature three local body positivity experts and include an empowering and enriching conversation about fostering a healthy and positive relationship with your body.

Andrea Munk, owner of Cedar Lily Boutique, said that this is a topic that deserves discussion in our current age of social media and comparison. As an owner of a bra-fitting boutique she has seen firsthand that women can become critical of their bodies.

“This is a way to start a conversation and look at our bodies and view them in a healthy way,” Munk said.

The panel comes at a perfect time, when bathing suit season and warm weather forces many women to evaluate their own feelings toward their bodies.

Munk believes that women can't find their inspiration in touched up images of celebrities or models in social media and magazines, and compare ourselves to these impossible to attain ideals.

Munk said that she is not a body positivity expert, but the women who are leading the conversation on Tuesday are.

All three women who are leading the panel come from different backgrounds, but all are devoted and passionate about fostering a healthy view of our bodies, and hope to empower others who attend the event to leave feeling more confident in their own skin.

The experts include Dana Rourke, the owner of Reclaiming the Wild, a body acceptance and intuitive eating coach; Sydney Bell, a social worker, writer, and body positivity advocate; and Suzanne Dietrich, owner of Gut Instincts Nutrition Counselling, a service that assists clients in creating a healthy relationship with their body and food.

A few people have asked if the event would be suitable for children, but Munk said that this event is specifically geared toward adults. Future events may be scheduled, and one designed for kids may become available at a later date.

A Conversation About Body Positivity is on Tuesday, July 10 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Cedar Lily Boutique, located at 5471 Highway 6 (inside of Yolanda’s Fashion Boutique.) Light refreshments will be provided, the location is wheelchair accessible, and all are welcome to the event.

Tickets are available at the door for $15 or purchased in advance for $10. Visit the event page for details.
