Guelph Police are investigating a serious collision just east of Downtown Guelph that appeared to have involved a pedestrian being struck.

Few details are available, but police responded to a call at the intersection of Macdonell Street and Wellington Street at around 7 a.m.

They tweeted that the intersection would be closed for "several hours" for an investigation, but traffic was able to pass through the intersection in some directions as police worked at the scene.

An officer took photos of items, including a black backpack, lying in the crosswalk that connects the north and south sides of Wellington Street.

The Guelph Police forensic identification unit was also on hand, which usually indicates the incident is of a serious nature and injuries are involved.

This story will be updated.
