Police say man with knife tried to steal cruiser in Downtown Guelph

On Jan. 6, 2019 at approximately 10 p.m., Guelph Police were on patrol downtown on Carden Street. Police were flagged down and advised there was a male swinging a metal pipe. The male was located in the area and displayed what was believed to be an edged weapon at police. After a brief physical exchange, the male fled from police and got into the driver’s seat of a police vehicle in an attempt to steal it. The male was unable to do so and proceeded to run into the parking lot off of Macdonell Street, where he was arrested.

A 27-year-old Guelph male was charged with weapons dangerous, assault with a weapon, attempt motor vehicle theft and breaching his Probation Order. He was held for a bail hearing on Jan. 7, 2019.
