On April 6, 2016 members of the Guelph Police Technological Crimes-Child Exploitation Unit executed a search warrant at a Watson Parkway North home.

The investigation was a result of a peer to peer file sharing investigation.

During the search of the home, computer systems, external storage devices and other articles were seized. A male resident of the home was arrested.

A 52-year-old Guelph man has been charged with possession of child pornography, making child pornography available for distribution and accessing child pornography. The name of the accused is being withheld.

Police said the accused was not creating or selling the child pornography, but stands accused of making it available to others via peer-to-peer distribution.

He will appear in court on May 24, 2016.

This project has been made possible by a grant from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and the Ministry of the Attorney General.

On Thursday, Guelph Police spokesperson Const. Mike Gatto explained that the Technological Crimes Unit conducts forensic analysis of computer systems and related digital items.  The Child Exploitation Unit investigates the exploitation of children, primarily on the internet.  The two are separate units within the police service.

"Making child pornography available is having files available online for other persons to download," Gatto wrote in an email.

No other persons are being investigated in connection with the case.
