On Jan. 31, 2019, several students from the Upper Grand District School Board and Wellington Catholic District School Board will participate in the Ontario Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training at Immigrant Services Guelph Wellington at 104 Dawson Road.

The UGDSB, WCDSB and Immigrant Services Guelph-Wellington are working with Accents Training - a local Workplace Health and Safety training provider to ensure young people have the safety skills and knowledge they need as a new worker in Ontario.

Accents’ multilingual workplace training provides occupational training with an emphasis on safety across a variety of workplaces, from industrial and construction to health care and food services.

Students will earn industry recognized training certification for Worker Health and Safety Awareness and the Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) 2015. This training session will prepare students to safely enter the workforce through part-time, co-op or summer employment.

This initiative is part of Guelph Wellington’s Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) program. School board staff and settlement workers at ISGW saw a need to ensure youth are well prepared for Canada’s workplace. This particular training session will be offered for Tigrinya-speaking students. Immigrant Services Guelph Wellington hopes to roll out the program in other languages in the future.

The SWIS program is active in regions across Ontario, with approximately 250 settlement workers from 22 settlement agencies working in schools across 22 school boards.

SWIS is funded by Immigration, Refugees & Citizenship Canada.
