A rally in solidarity with Afghanistan will be held at Guelph City Hall on Friday.

Organized by the group Afghans of Guelph, the organizers are asking everyone to meet at 6:00 p.m. to share Afghan voices, march as a collective and gather for a vigil at city hall.

“The Afghan community of Guelph stands in solidarity with those in Afghanistan who are grappling with a collapsing nation due to American, British and European imperialism and militarism, disregard for International Humanitarian Law and ignorance from the international community,” the group said in a statement.

The call for action comes following the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan earlier this month which has left thousands of people stranded and is causing grief to local families trying to connect with their loved ones.

The group said the international community and the Afghan government have abandoned their people, pointing to the April 2021 announcement from US President Joe Biden to withdraw all US troops from Afghanistan has been nothing short of a harrowing reality for our community for the last four decades.

Canada will resettle 20,000 vulnerable Afghans threatened by the Taliban and forced to flee Afghanistan.

“We are all grieving. These have been extremely difficult times, but as a community, we are strong. We must stand together to amplify the voices of our millions of brothers and sisters in Afghanistan. We must stand to give them courage and to bring awareness to the international community,” reads a post from the group.
