Ribs, delectable ribs. (7 photos)

Ribfest is about many things, but especially ribs.

The ribs are slathered and sizzling, the cold beverages are chilled to just above freezing, and the rides are ready to twirl.

Rotary Club of Guelph-Trillium’s Ribfest Guelph is back for the 19th year, set to welcome thousands to the grounds of Riverside Park. There’s a midway with a bunch of thrill rides, there’s a classic automobile show, a big presence by various community organizations, and a full slate of musical acts.

And then there are…

“The ribs, of course,” said Andre Lafontaine, when asked what brought him out early on Day 1 of the event. He had already devoured a plate of delectable ribs and was tearing into a deep-fried peach dessert that was disappearing fast.

Also disappearing fast were the mud puddles that had accumulated after Thursday’s downpour in the city. The skies cleared Friday, and the temperature rose to sultry levels. Saturday will continue to be hot, with sun and cloud. Sunday could see thunderstorms, while remaining hot and humid.

Maggie Zandstra and her granddaughter Kiana Kurtz were also among the first to sample the barbecue. They gave the grub overwhelming approval, with mouths full.

“I come every year, every day,” said Kiana. “It’s awesome.”

“We love the whole atmosphere,” said grandma. “Meeting people, all the music, and the food. It’s a great family day.”

“But mostly we come for the ribs, fries, and rides,” said the girl.

The bands play Friday until 11 p.m., and swing back into action Saturday at noon with Bluesynergy. Sandy MacDonald and Friends kicked off Friday’s schedule of bands. The music winds down just before 8 p.m. on Sunday.

The car show runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, with awards given out Saturday between 3:30-4 p.m. And rib judging awards will happen Sunday starting at 3:30 p.m. GuelphToday's community editor/reporter-photographer Tony Saxon is among the judges. GuelphToday is an event sponsor.

Admission is by donation to Rotary.
